The Rotary Club of Mumbai SOBO has engaged with the Vatsalaya Foundation to supplement nutritional needs for the young inhabitants of the Boys Orphanage at King George Vth Memorial Trust, Senapati Bapat Marg, Lower Parel. Pursuant to this, we propose to conduct a once-a-week distribution of seasonal, nutritious fruit to 50 children at the orphanage for an initial period of 1 year. Background on our Partner Foundation The Vatsalaya Foundation is a non-profit organization that helps children in need of care and protection, aged between 7 to 18 years, who are fleeing from environments of conflict, ill-treatment and despair. For many children drawn to the glitter of city life, their dreams of hope become nightmares. Rejected by society, deprived of their rights, these children are plagued by low self-esteem and suffer from depression and a basic mistrust of adults. Consequently they end up pursuing high risk, self-destructive behaviour and gradually deteriorate towards criminalisation. The Foundation intervenes and works with these children by admitting them into its two shelter homes in Lower Parel (Boys) and Murbad (Girls), where it takes care of their nutrition and education, seeking to empower them through a planned rehabilitation process with the objective of mainstreaming children back into society. The Logistics & Economics A fruit vendor has been identified, who will carry out supplies on an ‘at cost’ basis, in recognition and support of the cause. Fruits will be checked for quality and quantity by members, and sent to the orphanage on Friday or Saturday morning each week.
